Do I Need a Fused Spur for My Oven, Cooker or Hob?

Do I Need a Fused Spur for My Oven, Cooker or Hob?

What is a fused spur?

A fused spur is a special electrical connection point that your oven, cooker or hob plugs into. It looks like a small white switch on your kitchen wall, usually located near where your oven, cooker or hob will sit.

Think of it as a dedicated, safe power point specifically designed for high-power cooking appliances.

Why do I need one?

Electric ovens and hobs use a lot of power - much more than a regular plug socket can safely handle. A fused spur:

  • Provides the correct power supply for your appliance
  • Protects your electrical circuit with the right fuse rating
  • Prevents electrical faults or fires

Important: Without a fused spur, we cannot install your oven, cooker or hob.

How do I know if I already have one?

If you're replacing an existing electric oven, cooker or hob, you almost certainly already have a fused spur - it's what your old appliance was connected to.

Look near your current oven/hob location for:

  • A white switch plate on the wall (can sometimes say "COOKER" or "OVEN")
  • A connection point about the size of a light switch
  • Often positioned at worktop height or just above

Not sure? Take a photo and email it to us at help@electrocity.ie and we'll confirm.

What if I don't have one?

If you're installing an oven/hob and your kitchen has never had a fused spur before, you'll need our Fused Spur Installation add-on service.

Our qualified installer will:

  • Install a fused spur connection point
  • Connect it safely to your existing electrical circuit

Please note: If you proceed without this add-on and we arrive to find no fused spur exists, we cannot complete your installation. You will receive a refund for the installation charge minus a callout fee.
